MRI of the lung is an attractive technique due to lack of ionizing radiation. The lung signal change measured by MRI correlates with airflow obstruction in COPD patients.MRI is also used to determine the lung parenchymal changes that occur due to fibrosis. Hyperpolarized MR imaging (using Helium, Xenon, Oxygen etc.,) is increasingly used for functional imaging of lung. Fast gradient echo breath - hold MRI has been used at full inspiration and expiration to evaluate changes in lung volumes and thoracic dimensions.Echo MRI can be used to evaluate the abnormalities of diaphragmatic movement in patients with emphysema. MR allows determination of micro structural changes in lung parenchyma.
