CT is used to provide phenotypic characterization of COPD. The whole lung is imaged in a single breathe-hold using spiral CT, producing a 3D volumetric data set. It also facilitates quantitative evaluation of lung volumes, extent of emphysema and airway abnormalities. CT imaging during expiration is useful for identification of air trapping. Inspiratory and expiratory spiral CT can be used to calculate total lung capacity and residual volume. |
